Home Storage Tips – Storage Space between the Studs
Most homes today are of hollow wall construction, which means the space between the studs is being wasted. This narrow space is deep enough to become a pantry for canned and packaged goods. Building a cabinet in this void is very simple, or you can buy medicine chests that fit. You could add such a cabinet in a kitchen, utility room, or bathroom. Here are the steps in capturing this extra space:
1. Use a stud finder to locate adjacent studs. Try to avoid spaces with plumbing pipes or electrical wiring.
2. Decide on the height of the cabinet and drill holes at all four corners. You can make it floor to ceiling or any height in between.
3. Use a keyhole saw to cut out the opening in the gypsum board. The edge of the gypsum board should be flush with the studs.
4. Cut 2×4 cross blocks to be toenailed to the studs at the top and bottom of the cabinet.
5. Shelves can be made of 3/8-inch plywood and finished on the edges with stick-on veneer. Glue blocks on the sides for the shelves to rest on.
6. Apply trim mold all around the opening.
7. Use 3/4-inch plywood for the door. Use a magnetic catch to hold the door closed. Add a decorative knob and hang the door with hinges. Finish the door and molding to blend in with the decor of the room.
8. If you want the cabinet to look more finished inside, give all the surfaces a coat of paint. Now you’re ready to start stocking your mini-pantry.
